In other words, one or two nights of poor sleep can measurably impair the brain's ability to think clearly.

That helps explain why brain fog is one of the earliest and most common symptoms of insufficient sleep.

The problem isn't always obvious. Some people spend eight hours in bed but rarely enter enough deep or REM sleep because of frequent awakenings, sleep apnoea, excessive alcohol intake, or constant late-night screen use. Others accumulate what researchers call "sleep debt" consistently sleeping just a little too little each night until cognitive performance gradually declines.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that about one in three adults regularly fail to get the recommended amount of sleep. For many people experiencing brain fog, improving sleep quality may be one of the most effective places to start.

Most people associate iron deficiency with anaemia, but cognitive symptoms can appear before anaemia develops. Because iron helps transport oxygen throughout the body, low iron stores may leave the brain receiving less of the oxygen it needs to perform efficiently.

A review in The Journal of Nutrition found that iron deficiency can impair attention, memory, and work performance, particularly among women of reproductive age (Haas & Brownlie, 2001).

Other nutrients linked to healthy cognitive function include folate, magnesium, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids. While researchers continue investigating exactly how these nutrients influence brain health, one message remains consistent: the brain performs best when overall nutrition is strong.

Diets high in ultra-processed foods, physical inactivity, poor sleep, obesity, and chronic psychological stress have all been linked with increased inflammatory activity. None of these factors guarantee brain fog, but together they can create an environment where cognitive performance is more likely to suffer.

The encouraging news is that inflammation is also one of the most responsive systems in the body. Regular exercise, better sleep, a diet rich in whole foods, maintaining a healthy weight, and managing stress all help support a balanced inflammatory response over time.
